If you’ve been following my work here at TommyCWrites.com, you know that my journey as a storyteller has never been traditional. From the stages of Off-Broadway to being a 2026 TASTE Award Nominee for smartphone filmmaking, I’ve always believed that the best stories aren't found in a textbook—they’re found in the trenches.
But there is one part of my life that people often ask about: My life as a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher.
For years, I kept these two worlds separate. I thought the "Day Job" was just a way to support the "Dream." I was wrong. The high-stakes environment of emergency communications didn't just support my writing; it perfected it.
That is why I launched Playwright 9-1-1 on Substack.
What is Playwright 9-1-1?
While TommyCWrites.com remains the home for my professional portfolio and major project updates, Playwright 9-1-1 is where I perform the "surgical dissection" of the craft. It’s where I share the tactical creative discipline I’ve learned from handling thousands of emergency calls.
On the Substack, we dive deep into the Four Pillars of the 9-1-1 Mindset:
Script Triage (The Craft): How to take the pulse of a scene and know when it’s flatlining. We talk about narrative momentum and protecting "The Pop" in your playwriting.
The Agent-Less Career: I’m a firm believer in the "Agent-Less" playwright. I share strategies on how to build your own stage and stop waiting for permission from gatekeepers.
From Stage to Screen: Following my journey from playwriting to award-winning smartphone filmmaking. If I can get to Hollywood with a phone and 25 rejections, so can you.
Dispatch Discipline: The raw reality of the 9-1-1 comms center and how the "Judgment Calls" I make on duty translate to dramatic conflict on the page.
Featured Post: The 9-1-1 Mindset
My latest deep dive, "The 9-1-1 Mindset: Using 'Dispatch Discipline' to Finish Your Script," is a perfect example of what you can expect.
I discuss why writers often suffer from "Talking Head Syndrome" and how a 9-1-1 "Third Eye" can help you anticipate the climax of your story two scenes before it happens.
Join the Pipeline
If you want to move beyond the theory of writing and into the technical precision of a production-ready script, I invite you to subscribe.
TommyCWrites.com will always be here for the big picture, but the Playwright 9-1-1 newsletter is where the daily work happens. It’s a community for writers who are ready to treat their stories like an emergency—with urgency, clarity, and zero B.S.
